The Lion's Share (2018)
director & add'l camerawork (2018)
Rian Malan, a white South African writer whose family played a key role in nearly every major flashpoint of his country’s colonial past, built a career exploring difficult truths about race and power. In the late 1990s, Malan’s work led him to a curious discovery: the iconic song most people know asThe Lion Sleeps Tonight or Wimoweh by Pete Seeger actually dates back to 1939 when a Zulu migrant worker named Solomon Linda recorded “Mbube” in Johannesburg. Tracing the song’s remarkable journey to international fame and fortune that had tragically eluded the original songwriter and his decedents, THE LION’S SHARE follows Malan’s quixotic journey to try and win back rights for Linda’s surviving family.

Art and Craft (2014)
director, producer & cinematographer (2014)
Mark Landis is one of the most prolific art forgers of the modern era — and he isn’t in it for the money. What at first glance seems like a generous act of philanthropy turns out to be a 30-year ruse and one of the most and unusual cases of deception ever known to the art world. A cat-and-mouse caper told with humor and compassion, ART AND CRAFT offers an intimate and unflinching exploration of life with mental illness and the universal need for community, appreciation, and purpose. Made in partnership with director and producer, Jennifer Grausman, and co-director and editor, Mark Becker.

Black Cherokee (2012)
director, producer, editor & cinematographer (2012)
For over a decade and on a near-daily basis, Otis Houston Jr., a self-taught artist from Harlem, has performed before a captive audience of car-bound commuters passing through a natural bottleneck on Manhattan’s FDR Drive. BLACK CHEROKEE explores the unique artist’s work at a time of great productivity — and significant challenge as he’s charged with caring for his beloved father who had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. A meditation on family, inspiration, sanity and success, the film is a lyrical window into Houston’s deep sense of duty, his raw charisma, and the dynamic beauty of his art. Made in partnership with director Benjamin Rosen.
If A Tree Falls (2011)
co-director, producer & cinematographer (2011)
Daniel McGowan grew up in Rockaway, Queens and traveled out West in the late 1990s to become involved with the Earth Liberation Front, a radical environmental group. Horrified by the ecological practices of industry and government — and frustrated by the slow pace of change — the ELF had turned to property destruction and arson in protest across the U.S. IF A TREE FALLS investigates the group and explores how a working class kid (the son of a New York cop and a business major in college) found himself facing life in prison for “eco-terrorism.” Made in partnership with director Marshall Curry.
